Your liver is a bit of an unsung hero. It consistently works hard. The liver works with the pancreas and intestines to digest, absorb and process food. The liver’s main job is to filter the blood coming from the digestive tract before passing it to the rest of the body. The liver also detoxifies chemicals and metabolizes drugs. As it does so the liver secretes bile that ends up back in the intestines. It further metabolizes nutrients, makes blood clotting proteins, it regulates many hormones and the body cholesterol. Your liver also controls some infections.You may take your liver for granted, but you couldn’t cope without it!
* Bile is a dark green to yellowish brown fluid, produced by the liver. It is stored and concentrated in the gallbladder.
* Bile contains bile acids, which are critical for digestion and absorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins in the small intestine.
* Many waste products, including bilirubin, are eliminated from the body by secretion into bile and elimination in feces. Bile digest fat and prevent constipation. Sometimes when you’re having digestive issues it can be because of your liver not functioning at 100%.
Jaundice: The yellow tinge of jaundice is caused by the build-up of a substance called bilirubin in your bloodstream. If the cells of your liver are inflamed, or if the exit to your bowel through your bile duct is blocked, it can cause jaundice.
Liver Cirrhosis: Cirrhosis is a serious condition where the healthy tissue in your liver is replaced with scar tissue. It’s symptoms include shortness of breath, itchy skin, nausea and hiccups.
* Alcoholism is the major cause of cirrhosis. Hepatitis C virus causes the liver to swell.
* Non alcoholic Fatty Liver is the other cause of liver cirrhosis which in turn results from, diabetes, high blood cholesterol, obesity and high blood pressure.
Some inherited problems can cause liver disease. However, the most common preventable causes are;
Alcohol – Excessive consumption of alcohol often develops fatty liver and may leave to liver cirrhosis in severe cases. This can stop your liver from working efficiently, but it goes away if you stop drinking.
Obesity – If you’re very overweight, fat can build up in your liver again leading to another kind of ‘fatty liver’. This can cause scarring and occasionally cirrhosis.
Hepatitis – Several viral infections cause inflammation of the liver. Hepatitis A, sometimes called Infectious hepatitis, is very easy to catch but almost never causes long-term damage. A simple vaccination will protect you. Hepatitis B is less easy to catch but it can sometimes cause cirrhosis.
Medicines – Some medicines can affect your liver. Usually stopping the medicine will solve the problem. Your doctor can tell you if you need regular blood tests to check.
No matter how well we eat, some nutrients are difficult to obtain enough of from food alone. There are also circumstances where need for certain nutrients may increase. In these cases, it makes sense to supplement selectively with beneficial nutrients. Your liver tonic formula basically include adequate amounts of;
Milk Thistle liver detox supports liver function and may help cleanse toxins, detoxify the liver, and defend against free radicals. Schizandra that helps strengthen kidney function while balancing fluid levels and assisting with elimination.
N-acetyl-Cysteine which is a direct precursor to the most important antioxidant Glutathione that neutralizes the toxins.
Selenium as it boosts liver protection,it is known to strengthen immunity, prevent cancer and preserve elasticity also helps support healthful hepatic circulation.
Alpha Lipoic Acid which is natural substance produced by every higher-level cell and is responsible for many important functions in the body like obtaining energy from the food we eat, stimulating the growth of aerobic bacteria, recycling of other nutrients such as CoQ10 and Vitamins C and E, chelation of heavy metals and inactivating deleterious genes. However one must consult a doctor before taking any liver support supplement or liver medicine.
With a little care, your liver will last you a lifetime and will keep you healthy and happy.
