Hearing Aid: Hearing loss can be caused by exposure to loud noises, trauma, or ear disease; harm to the inner ear, illness and deterioration due to the normal aging process. The amount of noise we are exposed to today plays an important role in the recent increase of hearing loss across the nation.

Types Of Hearing Aid:

* Behind-the-ear (BTE) aids: Most parts are contained in a small plastic case that rests behind the ear; the case is connected to an earmold or an earpiece by a piece of clear tubing. This style is often chosen for young children because it can accommodate various earmold types, which need to be replaced as the child grows. Also, the BTE aids are easy to be cleaned and handled, and are relatively sturdy.

* "Mini" BTE (or "on-the-ear") aids: A new type of BTE aid called the mini BTE (or "on-the-ear") aid. It also fits behind/on the ear, but is smaller. A very thin, almost invisible tube is used to connect the aid to the ear canal. Mini BTEs may have a comfortable ear piece for insertion ("open fit"), but may also use a traditional earmold. Mini BTEs allow not only reduced occlusion or "plugged up" sensations in the ear canal, but also increase comfort, reduce feedback and address cosmetic concerns for many users.

* In-the-ear (ITE) aids: All parts of the hearing aid are contained in a shell that fills in the outer part of the ear. The ITE aids are larger than the in-the-canal and completely-in-the-canal aids (see below), and for some people may be easier to handle than smaller aids.

* In-the-canal (ITC) aids and completely-in-the-canal (CIC) aids: These hearing aids are contained in tiny cases that fit partly or completely into the ear canal. They are the smallest hearing aids available and offer cosmetic and some listening advantages. However, their small size may make them difficult to handle and adjust for some people.

If you think you may have a hearing loss, a hearing evaluation will determine the degree and what can be done. The sooner you identify hearing loss and take action, the sooner you will be able to reclaim your hearing health and amplify your quality of life. When a hearing care professional fits you with the right hearing aid for your hearing loss, you may be surprised at just how much you were missing.

Thermometer: A medical thermometer, also known as a clinical thermometer, is used for measuring human body temperature. The tip of the thermometer is inserted into the mouth under the tongue (oral or sub-lingual temperature), under the armpit (axillary temperature), or into the rectum via the anus (rectal temperature).Types of thermometer and its use:

* Liquid-filled thermometers are the traditional style thermometer and they generally consist of a glass rod filled with a specific liquid such as alcohol or mercury. As the temperature increases the liquid will expand in the tube, and as it cools the liquid will contract. Markings on the tube determine what the specific temperature is. Liquid-filled thermometers can be used under the tongue, under the armpit or rectally.

* Electronic or Digital thermometers are most commonly found as ‘Probe’ type thermometers. These are generally inexpensive, have an easy to read digital display, and a tested ‘clinical accuracy rating’. These thermometers are very useful in that they take the ‘Reading Error’ out of using a thermometer. Depending on the brand and can often have features such as fever alerts, measurement memory, automatic shut-off, back-lit screens (easier to read in the dark) and can even be pacifier shaped for infants.

* Infrared Thermometers work by measuring the amount of heat that is being radiated by a person’s body. These thermometers can be used in the ear or on the forehead. Some models which are more expensive even allow you to measure temperature without making contact with the person. Infrared thermometers are generally as accurate as digital probe thermometers but cost much more.
